Anyone who doubts the impact of social networking sites should have read the news report about two girls, aged 10 and 12, who were trapped in a storm drain near Adelaide, Australia.
Fortunately, they had a mobile phone with them but, instead of dialing triple “0” for the emergency services, they used it to record their predicament on Facebook. As luck would have it, a slightly more savvy school friend read the entry and alerted the rescue services, so they were recovered safe and well.
Which all seems pretty crazy but, on the plus side, it shows they kept a pretty cool head to be able to update their status from inside a dark drain. Those girls could have a great future in potholing.
